Wildlife
The Ho-Chunk people have had extraordinary ties to the land in Wisconsin for thousands of years, utilizing and managing abundant natural resources. Today, the Nation strives to preserve and protect this cultural heritage of their people by maintaining and restoring the quality of wildlife resources associated with tribal lands.
Habitat Improvement Projects the HCDNR staff is currently working on include:
- Stream Quality Improvement
- Prairie Restoration
- Wetland Restoration
- Bird and Amphibian Monitoring
- Habitat and Cover Type Mapping
- Afforestation
The Ho-Chunk Nation also works hand-in-hand with the Wisconsin DNR to protect natural resources. Together, we monitor Gray Wolf Populations in Wisconsin’s central forests, plan for the reintroduction of Elk near tribal lands, and also plan to avoid disturbing the sensitive habitat of the endangered Karner Blue Butterfly.
