Dells Youth & Learning Center

Our center serves between 125 - 175 youth throughout the year. Services we currently provide are in-school tutoring, after school tutoring, Ho-Chunk language classes, cultural activities, preventions and awareness activities, nutrition and fitness lessons, and recreational outings such as bowling, movies, frisbee golf, camping, and hiking. Along with these services, we also offer opportunities for our older students to go on tours of various college campuses across the state, provide assistance in preparing for the SAT's and ACT's, and encourage involvement in extracurricular academic events and experiences.

Currently, we have a few special groups within the program which are open to all youth. One of these is our drum group, "United Clans", which practices once a week and performs at a variety of events alongside our dance troop, 'Wasira". Another group we have is "Ho-Chunk Players", a film club where youth can write scripts, act in short films, or learn to run the camera. We also have several sports teams, depending on the time of year, that compete in weekend tournaments with teams from other areas' Youth and Learning Centers. And, for our politically motivated youth members, they also have the opportunity to participate in our area Youth Council where they learn leadership skills and practice teamwork in a governmental environment.

Along with our numerous activities, we encourage family involvement by holding a "Family Night" each month, where our youth and their parents come to the center for a meal and activity such as pumpkin carving, game night, or arts and crafts. In addition, we encourage our youth to participate in community activities like the Wozhawa Days Parade and area school districts' Native American Awareness Week assemblies.
